For our final project, we designed and built a high speed quadcopter with the goal of surpassing the current world record of 408 mph while staying within a budget of approximately $1,500. We used Onshape, wiring diagrams, a Gantt chart, and a budget spreadsheet for design, assembly, and integration of the drone’s motors, batteries, flight controller, power distribution board, FPV system, and radio controls. Throughout the project, we overcame challenges involving limited internal space, wire routing, component compatibility, programming, and the addition of previously unplanned components. Although we were unable to complete full high-speed testing within our original timeline, we successfully assembled and programmed a functional prototype while remaining within budget. In the fall, we will focus on flight testing, reducing weight, improving electronics packaging and wire routing, and determining whether the drone can ultimately beat the record.
